At various stages in your career, be it for applying to a PhD program, an internship during your PhD or even at later stages such as a Postdoc, you would be required to provide a Letter of Recommendation (LOR). It is usually a requirement to provide 3-5 such LORs in support of your application.
But, one thing that might take you by surprise is when you are asked by your referees, i.e., the letter writers, to draft out a LOR yourself.
When it happens the first time, it does come as a surprise but the referees might ask you do to ensure that the key pointers that you would like to be addressed are included.
This might sound easier than you think- because writing your own LOR is way harder. Think writers block, only much worse because if you praise yourself too much, you appear boastful and if you don’t say enough, you come across as a weak candidate.
